From Meilhan to Agen Along the French Canals

Having a canal holiday in the South West of France can be extremely enjoyable. We travelled from Manchester airport with BMIBaby to Bordeaux airport for £215 return for 2 adults. When we arrived our hire car was waiting from AVIS and we were soon on our way south east from Bordeaux. The plan was to utilize the car to have us to the boat hire company, arrange because of it to be returned and then have the automobile waiting for our return journey to the airport.

Our short break started at a small village named Meilham sur Garonne near Bordeaux, in the Aquitaine region of France. The trip was across the Canal Lateral a manhunter Garonne that will be an unspoilt area with wonderful scenery, superb local food and wine. The region has many medieval castles and earliest pens villages almost unchanged throughout the years.

You can hire a canal boat that either sleeps 2,6 or 8 people for your journey. All have comfortable beds - some double; fully equipped galleys (kitchens) with fridge, gas cooker and oven; all of the cutlery, crockery and utencils that you'll require; and come complete with all bed linen including duvets. However, you need to bring your personal towels. Heating is either with an area heater or there is central heating with regards to the size of the canalboat you hire. All boats have radio cassettes or CD players and some have 240v supply.

Before you leave the mooring for the first time, the boat hire staff go across the vessel with one to allow you to familiarize yourself with everything. They will give you instructions on starting the engine, handling the boat and stopping in addition to just how to moor up. You could have no problems understanding the staff because all of them speak great English.

For those that have an interest for nature, there's a large nature reserve easily accessible along this canal trip. The area are at Tonneins, called Reserve Naturelle de L'etang de la Maziere. The type reserve covers 100 acres of wetland, and is home to a vast variety of aquatic wildlife. Not only bird watchers will soon be fascinated but anyone by having an interest in nature. You can find well over 200 species of birds including herons, black kites, crested grebes and bitterns. As well as birds the reserve also offers plenty of mammals, 44 different species, so something for all your family to see and enjoy. agen bola

Over the canal towards our destination at Agen we also visited the vineyards at Buzet-Sur-Baize, for a guided tour of the complete process of wine making! After looking at all of the barrels of wine, you're able to sample at the tasting session. Wonderful! You are then able to purchase some bottles at the shop on site. Afterwards you are able to wander round the vineyards on several routes through the area.

At Agen, the finish of our canal journey, there's an attractive Art Museum which dates back again to the 16th century. It's over 2000 artwork including some from the Spanish artist, Goya. The museum also gets the Palissy ceramics, which are extremely decorative. You will certainly come away having both an academic and enjoyable day in Agen.

Our one weeks holiday on the canalboat from Meilhan to Agen cost about £700 in April for 2 adults. Prices may vary depending on dates and promotions etc. It was certainly very relaxing, entertaining, enjoyable and we'd thoroughly recommend this area of France for a vacation on the canals.
